The Expereince
Every Experience Tells a Story of Connection
At Gorukana, every experience offers a different way to connect — with the landscape, the Soliga community, traditional knowledge, and the natural rhythms of the B.R. Hills.
Together, they reveal the web of relationships that gives Gorukana its name, connecting people, place, culture, wellbeing, and nature. Whether walking through the forest, discovering medicinal plants, sharing in local traditions, or simply pausing to observe the world around you, each experience invites you to slow down, look deeper, and become part of the story of these hills.
Nature Walk & Bird Watching
Where Every Trail Has a Story
The forests and plantation landscapes around Gorukana are best explored on foot — and with a Soliga guide who knows these trails, trees, and birds intimately. Walking with someone whose family has lived in this forest for generations turns a nature walk into something far richer than sightseeing.
The BR Hills is exceptional birdwatching territory, home to kingfishers, parakeets, bulbuls, hornbills, and many resident and migratory species. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned enthusiast, the birds of BR Hills rarely disappoint.
Walks are guided by Soliga community members and are best undertaken in the early morning. Bring comfortable footwear, binoculars, and an open mind.
Amrutavana – The Healing Garden
Where the Forest’s Oldest Remedies Still Grow
Discover a living collection of medicinal plants traditionally used in Ayurveda and local healing practices. Guided walks through the garden reveal the stories, uses, and cultural significance of herbs, shrubs, climbers, and trees that have supported wellbeing for generations.
As a living classroom, Amrutavana introduces visitors to medicinal plant diversity, traditional knowledge systems, and the ecological relationships that connect people and plants. It offers a deeper appreciation of how culture, conservation, and wellbeing remain intertwined in the landscapes of the B.R. Hills.
Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple & View Point
Forest, Faith, and a View That Stays With You
Perched atop the white cliffs of Biligiri — bili meaning white, giri meaning hills in Kannada — the Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple is among the most remarkable sites in the BR Hills. The trek passes through forest, open terrain, and gradual elevation — a journey that earns the view.
The temple is a place of quiet reverence — ancient, quite, and deeply connected to the landscape. For the Soliga community, it holds special significance; the story of Kusumale and Lord Ranganatha lives in Soliga oral tradition, reflecting a long relationship with these hills.
From the viewpoint, the valleys and forests of the BR Hills stretch in every direction — a view that makes the scale and beauty of this landscape suddenly real.
Soliga Connect – Cultural Experience
Where Every Song Carries the Memory of the Forest
The Soliga community has lived in deep relationship with the BR Hills forest for centuries — and that knowledge lives not only in practice, but in song. Their music, dance, and oral traditions hold the seasons, wildlife, and rhythms of a life shaped by the forest.
The Soliga Cultural Programme offers a genuine encounter with this living heritage. Through music, dance, and storytelling — including the tale of Kusumale and Lord Ranganatha — guests gain an understanding no nature walk or guidebook can offer. You are not simply watching a performance, but being invited into a way of knowing the world.
More than a performance, it is an encounter with a living culture shaped by forest, memory, and belonging.
Note: This programme is offered as a celebration of Soliga cultural heritage, not a paid event. A minimum of 10 guests is required. Terms and conditions apply.
Lakeside Walk
Follow the Trail to the Water’s Edge
Step outside and follow the path through eight acres of silver oak and indigenous trees entwined with pepper vines and coffee shrubs, leading to the lake at the heart of the Gorukana campus.
There is no schedule and no destination beyond the water’s edge — just the campus, the stillness, and whatever the forest happens to be doing that day.
The lake holds morning mist, mirrors the canopy by midday, and draws in birds at dusk. Come at any hour. Stay as long as you need.
Ootada Mane
Simple Food, Honestly Made
Oota means food. Mane means home. Together they describe exactly what this is — an open pavilion overlooking coffee and pepper plantations, where meals are prepared simply, served warmly, and enjoyed without hurry.
Every meal at Oota Mane is made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients — wholesome breakfasts, hearty lunches, and comforting dinners rooted in the flavours of the BR Hills. Nothing elaborate, just honest food in a beautiful setting.
Meals here are unhurried. The view shifts with the light, and the food tastes better for it.
Digital Detox
The Notifications Can Wait
There are no televisions in the rooms at Gorukana, no Wi-Fi on campus, and mobile connectivity can be limited. This is not an oversight, but a deliberate choice.
Most guests arrive slightly anxious about being unreachable and leave grateful for it. A few days without screens, notifications, and the constant pull of digital life creates a kind of quiet that is increasingly rare.
What fills the space instead is simple — birdsong at dawn, conversation over a meal, light through silver oak at dusk, and time moving at its own pace.
A Smoke-Free, Alcohol-Free Campus
Leave It at the Gate. You Won’t Miss It.
The entire Gorukana campus is smoke-free — every room, common area, and outdoor space. Clean air is part of what makes this place what it is, and we ask guests to respect that. A designated smoking area is available near Gate 2 for those who need it.
Gorukana is also entirely alcohol-free. No alcohol may be brought onto or consumed on the property, and guests are expected to refrain from entering the campus under the influence of alcohol. This is not a reluctant restriction, but a reflection of what Gorukana is — a place for genuine rest, clear-headed connection, and quiet.
Often, after a day here, what feels like giving something up begins to feel like gaining something back.
Jeep Safari at K.Gudi
Into the Tiger Reserve — Where the Wild Begins
K.Gudi, within the BRT Tiger Reserve, is one of South India’s notable wildlife destinations — home to elephants, leopards, gaur, and rich birdlife. The jeep safari takes you into the reserve when wildlife is most active, in the early morning and late afternoon.
The safari is conducted by the Forest Department and is subject to availability and forest regulations. Gorukana does not manage bookings — guests arrange directly at K.Gudi.
Every safari unfolds differently, shaped by the rhythms of the wild.
Safari timings: 7:00am – 9:00am and 3:00pm – 5:00pm
K.Gudi is 18km from Gorukana — approximately 40 minutes by road in your own vehicle.
